Whats a fascia?

Running horizontally across the roofline, fascias are long boards of plastic or wood that are fixed onto the exterior or exposed roof rafters, or at the top of the outer walls.

These fascia boards cover the edges of various fittings, and waterproof the gap. It sort of wraps up the edges so it can protect the inside materials, and on the outside serves as an aesthetic function.
They come in various colours and patterns to be found easily in the market.

What’s a soffit?

Soffit serves both an aesthetic and functional purpose for a building’s roofing system.  It’s the skin that covers your eaves — without it, you would see your rafter beams fully exposed.

Cover it up with soffit, in the style and color that you like, and you add some instant and easy character to your building. Functionally speaking, soffit protects your rafters from the weather elements.

If your rafters are exposed in any areas, you’ll likely have mold buildup and rotting beams to replace — which definitely won’t make for a fun (or cheap) Spring.

UPVC ROOFLINE

Modern soffits are usually made of uPVC. UPVC soffits and fascias are hard wearing and cope well with exposure to moisture.

Fascias are traditionally a softwood board which is mounted to the exposed edges of your rafters, however in recent years this has been replaced with high grade uPVC as softwood has a tendency to rot.

What is guttering used for?

Guttering is used to collect rainwater from the roof and direct the flow of water as it drains.

Gutters catch the water and direct it into the downpipes, and towards a drain.

Guttering is fixed with the appropriate “fall” to prevent the water from pooling in places that it should not, which could eventually lead to your gutters overflowing, which is then likely to cause other problems.
